Tour description

Citerna among the most beautiful villages in Italy is located in Umbria, and is about 2 km from Monterchi in Tuscany. The view is extraordinary, in every corner enchanting scenarios open towards the Valtiberina and the mountains. Citerna was formed by two twin and close hills: the Poggio di Sant’Angelo and Poggio di San Giacomo and had two city gates: Porta Romana and Porta Fiorentina.

The visit will start right from the Poggio di Sant’Angelo where the Rocca and the Torrione are located, to reach the Pieve di San Michele Arcangelo, where inside there is a Madonna and Child by Luca della Robbia and the Crucifixion by Niccolo ‘Circignani il Pomarancio. A few steps away you will reach the main square, Piazza Scipione Scipioni with its panoramic view towards the Valley and the Civic Tower, we will continue to the Church Museum of San Francesco, where there are paintings by Raffaellino del Colle, a fresco by the Luca Singorelli school, a deposition by Pomarancio and the Madonna and Child in polychrome terracotta by Donatello from the early fifteenth century, the Madonna di Donatello contributes to enrich the artistic heritage of Citerna.

Possibility of visiting the ancient cisterns during the visit of the San Francesco Church Museum. A small arch leads into the path of the medieval walkway, where a series of open galleries offer a truly suggestive spectacle. From Citerna we will reach the Borgo di Monterchi, where the Museum of the Madonna del Parto by Piero della Francesca is located, which built for the Chapel of Santa Maria di Momentana between the villages of Monterchi and Citerna.
